Utility workers strike as Greek Cabinet convenes

ATHENS, Greece—Workers at state-run companies are walking off the job in a series of work stoppages to protest the government’s privatization plan in Greece’s renewed push to meet the terms of its international bailout.

The strike and planned demonstrations come as Prime Minister George Papandreou convenes his Cabinet later Thursday to approve additional austerity measures for this year and through 2015, and send the measures to Parliament. The plans include higher taxes, more cutbacks and the euro50 billion privatization program.

Papandreou and his ministers have come under intense criticism from their own Socialist party deputies in a series of marathon meetings over the past days.
